Roomskills MyMusic for Amazon Echo

Hello, nice to see you here.

So you have just installed our Alexa skill or found us on the internet and want to know how to set this up. Yes, here is the right place to look for information on how to get our Alexa skill up and running to listen to your own music collection on Amazon Echo speakers.

Now you have your new Echo speaker and you are unable to play your own music collection on it?

No problem, this is what Roomskills MyMusic Echo is for!

In order to play your own music on the Echo speakers, you have to activate the skill 'Roomskills MyMusic' in the Alexa App and let it guide you through the process of setting up your music server and connecting the music server to Roomskills. If you want to know a little bit more, see a list of the possible voice commands or just want to see what it is all about - have a look below.

Have fun setting it up.

  • Setup Roomskills-MyMusic Skill

  • Setup of the Roomskills-MyMusic Skill

Just search for the skills "Roomskills MyMusic" in your Alexa App and use the same email address as used in Roomskills or use your Amazon Account to authorize the skill.

Then start the skill by using the voice command

    Alexa, open music collection

and you will be guided through the installation process.

After a short introduction you will be asked to setup the music server. For this you have to go to our Website and there you find details on how to setup the music server and how to connect it to the Roomskills service.

  • Setup of the music server

  • Option 1: The easy way - Buy a pre-installed music server from us

To play your own music with the Roomskills MyMusic Echo Skill you need to have a local music server up and running to serve the music to the Echo speakers. The setup of the server takes some time and therefore we provide a service to setup the server for you. Just buy a preinstalled server in our shop.

After you have received the server you need to copy your music to the USB stick. In order for the music server to find the music, the so called MP3 Tags for artist, name of the song, album artist and album name have to be correct and stored in the mp3 files. A very noce tool to provide these tags to the mp3 files is the tool MP3TAG (to the internet page of MP3TAG). The tool is available for Windows and macOS and provides a convenient way to add the correct information like artist, title and albumname to the mp3 files. After having the files ready we copy the music files to the USB drive and plug the USB stick back into the music server.

Then the server needs to be connected to your router or local network and then we can connect the server to the power supply. The server will start up immediately.

After the server has started it should be reachable via the address 'max2play' or a click on the following button (if this address does not work you need to check on your internet router to get the address of your music server and fill this IP address in the following field). Then a click on the button will open the starting page of the music server.

And the Roomskills Local Connect configuration page should be reachable via the following button (if this address does not work you need to check on your internet router to get the address of your music server and fill this IP address in the following field).

To configure Roomskills Local Connect open the Roomskills Local Connect configuration page and login with your login data. Then enter the following data in the fields below and click on the button at the end of this page to test the configuration ('Test connection'). Possible problems will be listed at the beginning of this page.

    • LMS Server address: address of the Logitech Media Server, check your browser window to verify
    • LMS Server HTML Port: 9000, check your browser window to verify
    • LMS Server CLI Port: 9090, if it doesn't work check the settings of your Logitech Media Server
    • and no user password, unless you added this.

If the connection was successful, this is also shown at the beginning of this page.

That was all. The music server has been setup successfully. Now is the time to test it by saying

    Alexa, open music collection

And hopefully you get the following nice answer:

    What shall I play?

  • Option 2: Raspberry Pi with MAX2PLAY

In order to get the music server up and running based on the MAX2PLAY system you need a Raspberry Pi and a USB stick to store your music. A nice description on how to setup the system with MAX2PLAY can be found at the webpage

    https://www.max2play.com/en/

There you go to the 'Download' and follow the instructions under 'Features' > 'Getting started' on how to setup MAX2PLAY on a Raspberry Pi.

After MAX2PLAY is running you need to install the Logitech Media Server which will be our music server. For that we need to acces the MAX2PLAY configuration page. This should work by using the following button (if the button doesn't work we have to find out the IP address of the MAX2PLAY system by checking in our Internet router and fill it in the text field).

On the MAX2PLAY web page you find a good description on how to install the Logitech Media Server under 'How-Tos' > 'HowTo – Install Squeezebox Server and Add New Plugins'

    https://www.max2play.com/en/how-tos/howto-install-squeezebox-server-and-add-new-plugins/

After the music server is installed and the music has been added to the server we need to install the plugin Roomskills Local Connect to connect the music server to Roomskills. The installation is done on the Logitech Media Server. With the following button you can open the music server (if this address does not work you need to check on your internet router to get the address of your music server and fill this IP address in the following field).

First you go to Settings (Button in the lower right corner) and in the new web gage select the tab 'Plugins'. On the plugins tab you go to the end of the page and enter the following address as additional repository

    https://www.roomskills.com/lms-repo/repo.xml ()

Then we activate the new available plugin 'Roomskills Local Connect Plugin'. And after the necessary restart we use the following button to login once into the plugin and by doing so connect it to Roomskills (if this address does not work you need to check on your internet router to get the address of your music server and fill this IP address in the following field).

  • Option 3: Raspberry Pi with piCore Player

In order to get the music server up and running based on the piCorePlayer you need a Raspberry Pi and a USB stick to store your msuic. A nice description on how to setup the system can nbe found at the webpage

    https://www.picoreplayer.org/

There you go to the 'OPTION 2: DEDICATED MUSIC SERVER (Logitech Media Server; LMS)' and follow the instructions on how to setup the music server. After booting up the system please give it a short while and then the system should be visible you can open the music server by a click on the following button (if this address does not work you need to check on your internet router to get the address of your music server and fill this IP address in the following field):

Next we have to install and setup Roomskills Local Connect. Roomskills Local Connect is required to establish a secure connection between your music server and the Roomskills service.

Go to the tab 'Tweaks' and search for the area 'User commands' near the end of the page and add the following text in one of the fields:

    mkdir /opt/roomskills_local_connect ; cd /opt/roomskills_local_connect ; wget https://www.roomskills.com/download/picore/start.sh ; chmod +x start.sh ; /opt/roomskills_local_connect/start.sh
    ()

Click on 'SAVE' and confirm to revisit 'Tweaks'.

At the piCore configuration web page go to the tab 'Tweaks' to the area 'Schedule CRON jobs' and add the following text:

    0 * * * * /opt/roomskills_local_connect/save_config.sh
    ()

Click on 'SAVE' and confirm the reboot.

And the Roomskills Local Connect configuration page should be reachable via the following button (if this address does not work you need to check on your internet router to get the address of your music server and fill this IP address in the following field).

  • Option 4: Server based on MS Windows, macOS, Debian, Ubuntu, Raspbian or Raspberry OS

First you need to install a Logitech Media Server with your music collection on it. You can install it yourself by using an installation package, which you can find at

https://downloads.slimdevices.com/LogitechMediaServer_v8.2.0/ (opens in a new tab)

If the Logitech Mediaserver is installed in a docker environment you also need to map the ports 32653, 32655 amd 32656 and set the environment variable 'RLC_IP' with the IP address of the host.

After the music server is set up, all that is left to do is to connect your Logitech Media Server to our Roomskills Service. And this is done by installing the tool Roomskills Local Connect. Roomskills Local Connect can be installed as plugin on the Logitech Mediaserver directly. Just add our repository in the section "Additional Repositories". For that you click on "Settings" on the lower right area of the main page of the LMS web interface. Then you click on the tab "Plugins" and at the end of that tab you enter the following address

    https://www.roomskills.com/lms-repo/repo.xml ()

After having entered the address you click on "Apply". After the repository has been added you can select the new plugin "Roomskills Local Connect" and click again on "Apply". After confirming the reboot of the Logitech Media Server, the new plugin will be installed.

If you have trouble installing our plugin, please check out our website, where you can find a detailed description on how to install Roomskills Local Connect at "Product > Roomskills Local Connect" on various systems.

After having installed the Roomskills Local Connect Plugin you go to the settings of the plugin (Link Settings next to the plugin on the plugin overview page) and click on "Go to Roomskills Local Connect local configuration" to enter the configuration page.

There you log into the app using your Roomskills username and password or using the Amazon Login function.

If the installtion as plugin does not work you can have a look at Products > Roomskills Local Connect to find a detailed description on how to install Roomskills Local Connect for all the different systems like Windows, macOS Linux, Docker etc. . Please follow one of these options to get Roomskills Local Connect up and running.

  • Option 5: QNAP NAS Systems

The installation on a QNAP NAS system is done with 2 installation steps.

Add the QNAP club EU QPKG store to the QNAP App Center following the installation guide on https://www.qnapclub.eu/

Install the App "QLogitechMediaServer". This should be possible on almost all Qnap Models with the operating system version above QTS 4.0 (independent if ARM or Intel architekture).

Follow the installation steps and add your music library to the server. In order for the music server to find the music, the so called MP3 Tags for artist, name of the song, album artist and album name have to be correct and stored in the mp3 files.

In the next step we have to set-up Roomskills Local Connect to connect the music server to Roomskills.

You can find a detailed description on how to install Roomskills Local Connect at "Download".

After the installation you log into the app using your Roomskills username and password or using the Amazon Login function.

Then you select the just created Musiccontrol LMS service in the drop down menu.

Then you enter the configuration parameters like IP address of the LMS server, the port of the Logitech Mediaserver web page and if you did set-up a username and password you enter them as well.

Every time a parameter is changed the configuration is tested and once everything works the service is shown as active.

Next we go to the Roomskills page and click on the 'Test connection...' button again. Now the configuration page for the players should get visible and we can continue setting up the players.

That was all. It might take a few seconds for the connection to be fully established, but now we can start testing the Alexa skill.

    • LMS Server HTML Port: for QLogitechMediaServer normally '9001' check your browser window to verify
    • LMS Server CLI Port: for QLogitechMediaServer normally '9090', if it doesn't work check the settings of your Logitech Media Server
    • and no user password, unless you added this.

If the connection was successful, this is also shown at the beginning of this page.

That was all. The music server has been setup successfully. Now is the time to test it by saying

    Alexa, open music collection

And hopefully you get the following nice answer:

    What shall I play?

  • Option 6: Synology NAS Systems
    • Synology NAS: The installation on a aSynology NAS system is also possible, but since the newest Synology operating system a 'Plus' model is required, because the music server needs to be installed using the docker functionality, which is only available on the 'Plus' models.
      • Installation of the Logitech Media Server as music server on a Synology NAS
        • If not already availabe we need to install the Docker package using the 'Package Center' on the NAS.
        • Then we need to search for the 'lmscommunity/logitechmediaserver' docker image in Docker under 'Registration'. As Version/Tag I suggest 'stable'.
        • In the tab 'Image' you can see the status of the installation. As soon as the download is finished you can start the installation using the available 'Assistent'. Important settings are:
          • 'Activate Automatic Restart': This will ensure the music server gets startet at NAS Start.
          • Under 'Link on Desktop' you select 'Webpage' and add as Port ':9000' after the entry.
          • You also need to add 3 directories in the area Volume
            • In the directory docker you create a subdirectory LMS and underneath the directory config and select it in to the directory /config in the container
            • The directory containign the music is selcted to the directory /music and
            • the directory with the playlists is selected to the directory /playlist in the container.
          • Then you have to define the ports int he area 'Port Settings'. All necessary ports can be set to the same ports (9000 to 9000, 9090 to 9090, and twice 3483 to 3483).
          • By clicking on the button at the end close the 'Extended Settings'
        • By clicking on 'Continue' you can start the music server
        • Then you can reach the music server by clicking on the new icon on the Synology desktop.
        • If the music is not available this might be caused by the read rights that are necessary for the music server to be able to access the music files. This can be corrected using the Tool Filestation on the NAS. Jou can set the read access to 'Everyone' for all music directories used. This way the music server can definitely access the music files.
      • Next you have to install 'Roomskills Local Connect' as additional package on the Synology

To connect Roomskills Local Connect with Roomskills you need to login with your login data. Then enter the following data in the fields below and click on the button at the end of this page to test the configuration ('Test connection'). Possible problems will be listed at the beginning of this page.

    • Music server URL (URL): http://<IP Adresse des NAS>:9000/
    • CLI Port: 9090
    • Password Protection: No (unless you added this)
    • Upload Meta data: No
    • External Access: No

If the connection was successful, this is also shown at the beginning of this page.

That was all. The music server has been setup successfully. Now is the time to test it by saying

    Alexa, open music collection

And hopefully you get the following nice answer:

    What shall I play?

  • Option 7: Connect an existing Logitech Media Server

If you don't have already a Logitech Media Server with your music collection on it, you can install it yourself by using an installation package, which you can find at

https://downloads.slimdevices.com/LogitechMediaServer_v8.2.0/ (opens in a new tab)

  • Additional Information

  • Using MyMusic with separate Alexa Account in one household

If you want to use Roomskills Local Connect with separate Alexa Accounts in one household you can share the service from one account to the other. Both Alexa users have to have a coresponding user on Roomskills and both Users need to have the MyMusic Alexa skill activated. Then you open the service details of the service that should be shared and enter the email address of the user that should get access to the service. Under the user that should get access to the service you create a new service from the type "Shared Service" and enter the email adress of the giving user.

  • What is the difference between the packages "Free", "Basic" or "Advanced" in regard to MyMusic Echo

If you really want to play your music on Echo speakers you should have the package "Basic". You can still play single songs in the package "Free", but thats about it. If you want to share your music library with more than one other user you need to have the package "Advanced". You can always change your packages at the menu item "Account" and the remaining time is adjusted accordingly. The packages can be ordered under the menu item Account as well.

  • Playing music from your library from outside your local network

In general you can play your local music collection from outside your network. But in order to do so you need to make Roomskills Local Connect accessible from outside your network. This is done by a so called port forwarding on your Internet Router. We suggest, that you only setup the port forwarding if you have some experience in Network Security and know what you are doing, when opening access to Roonskills Local Connect though your Internet Router. Roomskills Local Connect is set-up in a way, that the music from the music server is provided only for a few hours through the URL only given to the Echo player. Therefore there are not much reasons not to expose the required port to the internet, but still you should know what you are doing to make sure there is nothing else exposed to the Internet through the process.

    Here the required steps:

    • First you have to make sure your Internet Router has a fixed address in the internet. The key word here is DynDNS. A lot of Routers provide the funktionality, so please find out how to establish a DynDNS address for your router.
    • Then you have to forward the port 32656 from the outside to the port 32656 on the computer running Roomskills Local Connect.
    • The last step is to configure Roomskills Local Connect to use the external address by entering the address in the form 'http://<DynDNS-address of the router>:32656' into the field Local Connect App Alexa URL.

That was it - have fun using MyMusic Echo from outside your local network!
